RETARDERS are, as the name suggests, an auxiliary braking device suitable for use in both on highway and off highway applications including underground use. These can be fitted onto the gearbox, in the driveline or mounted on the drive axle.

The RETARDER is a power-absorbing device, which unlike wheel brakes, does not depend upon friction to generate a retarding force. Instead, a driveline retarder consists of a number of stationary electromagnets and two rotating discs. When the retarder is activated the driveline brake generates a powerful electric current that acts as a retarding force that is transmitted to the vehicles driveline. Neither engine RPM nor gear selections affect the units retarding ability.

Chassis Mounted Units Driveline concept

Retarder is installed between transmission and axle by means of independent brackets.

The 16 coil series of retarder has been developed to be fitted into the chassis between the gearbox and the rear-driving axle. It's the best choice when there is enough room between the axles and maximum braking is required. Our technical personnel will assist in selecting the most suitable unit for your application based on GVW, axle ratio and working conditions

Transmission concept

Retarder is installed on the transmission with an adapter.

This 16 coil series has been developed to be fixed in the chassis between the gearbox and the rear-driving axle. The FF series doesn't have a central shaft therefore it's the best choice when maximum braking is required and there is limited room between the axles due to obstacles such as cross members and air tanks.

Axle concept

Retarder is being installed on the differential of the axle with an adapter.

Specially suited for semi trailers the axle retarder is substituted for one of the loading axles.
